URRO negotiates and concludes reproduction licenses with different users in Uganda. The users that are targeted by this license include:
- Schools;
- colleges and tertiary level training institutions;
- universities both private and public and;
- other educational institutions or for professional training or public education.
The licenses enable both learners, their teachers, lecturers and other employees that need to make copies beyond what is permissible under the fair use provisions in the Copyright Act to make photocopies, printouts and digital copies without having to obtain permissions from individual authors and publishers. The licenses allow the user to:
- make photocopies from books, newspapers, magazines, journals etc.
- scan and digitally store printed material
- send material by email to students and colleagues at your school
- print digital material
The licenses provide users with a number of benefits including:
- Provide legal access to protected content;
- Give users access to a wide repertoire inclusive of local and international works;
- Users negotiate with one centre for multiple authorisations;
- Users pay one fee for multiple works and;
- Users get indemnified from unintended infringements
The annual fees charged on the licenses and collected by URRO are distributed as royalties to both local and foreign authors and publishers of literary works.
By your institution applying for the copying license and paying for the fees, Uganda’s Book Industry is incentivized to create more books, provide more employment and create wealth. To apply for a copying license click here
